Optimising Avocado Yield with Region-Specific Canopy Management: Insights from Light Interception and canopy modelling (AV24011)
Project start date: 04/06/2025
Project completion date: 22/08/2026
Project summary:
The Australian avocado industry continues to face challenges in achieving consistent productivity and yield across its diverse growing regions. This one-year scoping study was designed to lay the foundation for future research and development by evaluating canopy management strategies that optimise light interception and distribution. Through a comprehensive literature review, stakeholder engagement, and assessment of emerging technologies, the project aimed to identify region-specific needs and practical challenges, while also evaluating the economic feasibility of potential solutions.
The project’s outcomes will directly benefit avocado growers, agronomists, consultants, and researchers by enhancing industry knowledge of canopy management and the physiological drivers of productivity. Key outputs include a literature review, grower consultations, a webinar, and an industry-focused article, all guided by a dedicated project reference group. These insights will support informed decision-making and pave the way for tailored canopy management tools that align with industry needs, ultimately helping growers improve profitability and orchard performance.
